Assignments are good in a way- they give you lets say a channel through which your creativity can flow.
 If you're feeling blocked, an assignment frees you from doing the basics of creating and allows you -frees you- to work on details.
It's much more low-risk creatively. You're not risking your own creations- they're someone else's. So that also frees you.
